Plenty of Pennies: Man Cashes in 500 Pounds of 1¢ Coins

SLATON, Texas – What does it look like to save every penny you come across for more than 60 years? For 81-year-old  Ira Keys, it means 25 coffee cans full of more than 81,000 copper coins, weighing more than 500 pounds.

He started saving pennies in the 1950s, after his father gave him some valuable advice, “He says, ‘Whatever you do, son,’ he says, ‘save your money.’ I didn’t have a lot of money, so I saved pennies and I just kept saving them.”
