Michael Sam(CNN) — The first openly gay man to be drafted into the NFL has joined the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad — taking the next step in his quest to make a team’s regular roster.

The Cowboys signed defensive lineman Michael Sam to the 10-man practice squad, the team said Wednesday. The squad supplements the team’s regular 53-man roster for practices only.

Sam, an All-American defensive end who played for the University of Missouri, made history when he was picked by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh and final round of the NFL draft last May. But the Rams waived him Saturday after four preseason games.

Michael Irvin: I Love That Michael Sam’s With the Cowboys – He’s a Stud

Michael Sam has the blessing of The Playmaker … ’cause NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin tells TMZ Sports he “loves” that the defensive end signed with his beloved Dallas Cowboys. “He knows how to get to the quarterback and we’re happy to see that. When you’re trying to get players, and the Cowboys need players, that can get to the quarterback, you sign Michael Sam.” As was previously reported, Sam inked a deal with Dallas yesterday to join the practice squad … just as soon as he completes a physical.
