July 6 is #InternationalKissingDay, so we thought it’d be a good idea to point out some of the disgusting diseases you can get just by puckering up.

You’re welcome.

P.S. You’re all diseased.

#1  Mononucleosis

Often referred to simply as “mono”, the symptoms resemble that of the flu and can included a fever. There is no treatment and the infection can last up to several months.

#2 Gum Disease

Mmmm. Gum disease. While gum disease itself cannot spread through kissing, the bacteria from it can. So brush your damn teeth.

#3 Herpes

The colloquial gift that keeps on giving. Over 50% of the U.S. has oral herpes and once you’ve got it, it ain’t leaving. Oral herpes caused by simplex type 1 can also cause genital herpes. So you have that to look forward to.

#4 Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Caused by the Coxsackie virus, this one just sounds disgusting. Symptoms include rash, fever and blisters that can burst and create all kinds of awesomeness. This is often transmitted via the fecal-oral pathway. So if you get this, your kissing compainion has some explaining to do.

#5 Polio

While not something we really have to worry about these days, Polio can spread through oral contact. While there is no cure, it doesn’t really pop up much in the U.S. anymore. Unless you wear a tin foil hat and think vaccines are mind control devices used by the illumanti, get vaccinated and don’t worry about it.
