ARLINGTON, TX - The fight of the century is set to take place Saturday between Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. It's a match boxing fans have been waiting for seemingly forever.
So just imagine the scene in Sin City this week leading up to the big fight at the MGM Grand. Now use that same imagination to envision all the hype surrounding this mega fight right here in the metroplex.
But is a prize fight of this magnitude really a possibility for DFW? Event Producer Lester Bedford says yes, "I think it’s very realistic to think that Cowboys Stadium, which is now AT&T Stadium, could host the biggest fight in history."
Jerry World has already hosted some of the biggest sporting events in the world, not to mention Pacquiao has already fought at AT&T stadium twice. Pacquiao`s promoter Bob Arum reportedly wanted the big fight at AT&T stadium but Mayweather insisted the fight take place in Vegas, "Cowboys Stadium was very much in the discussion. In fact I actually arranged a meeting between the Cowboys and promoter Top Rank", says Bedford.
One thing that might help the Metroplex secure a major fight could be a recognizable hotel. Arlington is reportedly in talks with a developer to build a 750 room upscale MGM hotel, conveniently close to Jerry World.
So, a Mayweather-Pacquiao sized fight in DFW may not be such a pipe dream after all. Soon, you could hear the famous phrase “Let’s get ready to rumble!” right in our own backyard.
