AUSTIN - It's already illegal in some parts of Texas and now a lawmaker in Austin is trying to ban texting behind the wheel statewide. That includes while you're stopped at a red light or stop sign.

The Texas House approved the ban on texting while driving. It now heads to the Senate.

Lawmakers approved a statewide texting ban in 2011, but then-Gov. Rick Perry vetoed it.

Gov. Greg Abbott says it's too early to say whether he'll veto a ban.

How much will this law help though? A study released by AAA dealing with distracted driving by teens:

  • Cell phones caused 12% of accidents
  • Just talking to passengers was at 15%
  • Singing or dancing to music was the cause in 6% of cases

Geez, how long until those driverless cars are ready?
