DALLAS -- The 2016 election season is heating up, and it's got Dallas seein' red.  Republican red, that is.

Yeah, there were more than a few "elephants" in the room at the Kay Bailey where the Texas GOP Convention got underway Thursday morning.  Among them: Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick.

"It is great to be in the biggest Republican convention on the planet," Patrick told the crowd.

"America does not have the luxury to get this election wrong," Abbott said.

GOP supporters shared some of their thoughts with NewsFix, too.

"I think it's important to defend the conservative values," said Connie Booth.

"I want to make sure we remain small," Sharon Dale said, referring to the government. "And that everything doesn't go to Washington."

"I believe it's important to be a part of it," said Bryan Arvello. "That way you can actually see the results you want."

Ted Cruz didn't get quite the results he wanted. He dropped out of the presidential race -- but he got some support Thursday for another big job.

Said Dan Patrick, "I'd love to see Ted Cruz to be on the Supreme Court."

That nomination, presumably, would come from the man who has the GOP POTUS nomination -- you know, presumably.  But does that controversial candidate have the support of the party?

"I have been a Trump supporter since the very beginning," said Booth.

"I haven't been a Trump supporter the whole time," said Arvello. "But since he's the nominee I will be voting for him."

"Whoever is the nominee we will support," Dale said. "We do not want Hillary to be president."

Yeah, doesn't sound like this red state's gonna be turning blue over everybody's favorite billionaire come November...

In the meantime, this Republican party will be in town through Sunday.

Don't Miss
