AUSTIN — Texas could soon be the next state to legalize medical marijuana.

State senator Jose Menendez filed a bill Tuesday that would expand the use of pot for medical purposes. Texas already allows epilepsy patients to use cannabis oil, but the new bill would legalize marijuana for a much wider range of medical conditions.

It would also leave it up to doctors to decide how much cannabis a patient should get. Some Texans say they’ve considered moving out of state because of such restrictive marijuana laws.

“Why are we forcing Texans to become medical refugees? This is not a partisan issue. This is a medical issue,” Menendez said.

Medical marijuana is already legal in 28 states and Washington, D.C.
