DALLAS — Fans of the fried and lovers of the lard can rejoice! The finalists for the 2016 Big Tex Choice Awards have been announced.
“The State Fair of Texas and great food go hand-in-hand, and state fair concessionaires have outdone themselves yet again,” Karissa Condoianis with the State Fair Of Texas said.
Some of the contenders include Deep Fried Bacon Burger Fog Sliders on a stick, State Fair Cookie fries, and one of our favorites, fried Jell-O.
“It took days and a couple of months to get this to where we want it,” fried Jell-O creator Ruth Hauntz said. “It’s an honor to really be a part of this event. It keeps me going.”
“This year we are bringing you State Fair Cookie Fries,” creator Isaac Rousso told Newsfix. “We’re going to have a chocolate chip version and a sprinkles version that you can have. The Chocolate will be accompanied with a chocolate dipping sauce. The sprinkles will have a strawberry dipping sauce that looks like ketchup.”
55 mouth watering dishes were narrowed down to eight nominees. For some of these semi-finalists, the Big Tex Award is a family tradition. Among them: Jona Mckee & Christi Erpillo, who created Chicken Pot Pie with Mac n Cheese Dip.
“Our parent taught us this when they started 48 years ago,” McKee said. “They said serve something that you’ll eat yourself. We are just so honored that we have so many customers that come back year after year.”
This year, fair fanatics will have a lot to sink their teeth into by the time the final winner will be announced on August 28, but don’t forget to bring the Pepto.
The fair begins on Friday, September 30.
