DALLAS — Nothing says 4th of July like fireworks! And while we may all love the explosions in the sky, our pets aren’t a huge fan of them.

Yeah, turns out the loud noises send our furry friends running, and that leads to a huge increase in missing pets every Independence Day.

“We’re pretty busy on July 5th. It’s a nationwide trend,” said Ann Barnes, Operations Manager at Dallas Animal Services.

According to Pet Amber Alert, lost animals increase over 30% in the days after July 4th. So what can you do to keep your four legged pals safe and sound come fireworks time?

“The number one thing is -- make sure your pets have ID. Make sure they have tags, their rabies tag, if they can get a microchip that’s even better,” said Barnes. “Make sure that your fence is secure. That if your pet does get scared and they run that there’s no holes in the fence to get out of.”

She added, “Don’t take your pets with you to fireworks displays. It’s a very strange, loud environment for them and a lot of people lose their pets at events like that.”

And despite what sappy Hollywood movie endings might tell you, the sad fact is less than one in five missing pets ever make it back home.

So take those extra precautions this holiday weekend, because there’s nothing American about missing pets!
