NEW YORK — A day after stepping down as President of the Spokane NAACP, Rachel Dolezal is stepping up and speaking out. She sat with the Today Show’s Matt Laurer to set the record straight about her identity.
“I identify as black,” Dolezal said.
But there’s one small problem. Dolezal was born a white woman. Her parents, both Caucasian, can’t understand why she claims to be African-American.
“It’s a little more complex than me identifying as black or answering a question of ‘Are you black or white?'” Dolezal said.
Hey, before her parents outed her she had everyone convinced. She rocked a new hairstyle, attended the historically black Howard University, taught African-American culture classes at Eastern Washington University and most recently served as a civil rights activist at the NAACP.
But now folks on Twitter are comparing her coming out to that of Caitlyn Jenner’s transgender transition.
Whether you agree with the comparison or not, it looks like they might have something in common other than identity issues. We’re talking reality T.V.
That’s right, Radar Online reports Dolezal is “fielding multiple offers” to film a reality show.
For now, Dolezal isn’t admitting to any wrongdoing by portraying herself as a black woman.
Guess this is one issue that isn’t going to race out of the headlines anytime soon.
