PLANO - The George Bush Turnpike turned into a calm highway to heaven for Dallas Police  Cpl. Lorne Ahrens.

The highway was shut down for more than an hour as the officers funeral procession made its way to its final resting place.

At first some drivers didn’t know why there was a shut down. Bo Adams realized, “For the officers? Oh then awesome, do it, shut down the whole thing.”

While many came out to grieve in their own way, others came came out along the turnpike to remember.

“My cousin was John Chase and he was killed in the line of duty back in 1988 in down town Dallas, so my families been through this," said Meredith Tinney.

And while the final farewell turned the turnpike into a traffic nightmare, no one seemed to mind giving this veteran officer the send off he deserved.

"They can shut it all day long for this" said Kent Springer.
