ARLINGTON, TX — The Olympic torch is almost lit! We’re just five days away from the opening of the 2016 summer games in Rio, and for the USA one of the best crews rolling into Brazil is the Women’s Gymnastics Team.
Two gymnasts, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman, are back from the 2012 gold medal squad, but it’s one of the new faces who some see as the anchor to this team.
Simone Biles, 19-year-old, defending all-around world champion and native Texan, is ready to spring onto the scene in her first Olympics.
Almost a year and a half ago, NewsFix caught up with Simone at the 2015 AT&T American Cup at AT&T Stadium. Even with the Olympics still a distant goal at that point, this girl already had her head in the right place.
“Yesterday I was face-timing [my friends] and they were like ‘Oh Simone Biles, two-time world champion’ and I was like guys, I’m still Simone, nothing has changed,” Simone told us back in March 2015. “So I think keeping it normal is good for me.”
Well, it obviously has been good for her!
And at just 4’ 9”, she’s about to get her chance to stand taller than ever as she aims to become to 4th consecutive American woman to win gold in the individual all-around category, and as she tries to lead her team back to the medal podium for the sixth straight Olympics.
And while she’s wowing them in Rio, the biggest cheers she’ll be getting will still be from deep in the heart of Texas!
