DALLAS-Names are like brains, everyone has one, but City Councilman Dwaine Caraway`s push to change Lancaster Road to Nelson Mandela Boulevard has people thinking it’s not such a smart idea.

The Dallas City Planning Commission met on Thursday to discuss the proposal.

There are a lot of businesses along the 6 miles of road that would be affected by the name change.

“With all due respect to Mr. Mandela, it’s not the name change, it’s not that we don`t want to represent him, it’s that these business owners and residents will suffer,” said Jeffery McZeal of the Veterans Resource Center.

Veterans from the local VA hospital which also sits on Lancaster Road aren`t opposed to a name change, but they have something different in mind.

“A hero from America, not some other country,” said Bille M. Scott.

The commission voted to not approve the staff’s recommendation and ultimately against a street name change.

Dallas City Council will take a vote at next week`s meeting. Hey, maybe such an iconic man needs a little more recognition than a 6 mile road?
