ARLINGTON — Saving lives is just part of the job for firefighter Darren Burkhart; rescues are second nature.
Yet, when Darren’s son was born early and spent his first few months of life in the NICU, Darren was the one in need of a rescue.
“He was in the NICU for 105 days”, Burkhart said. “It was hard the whole time, but we knew that we could leave because of the staff. He was well taken care of.”
Little Mason is just one of several success stories delivered at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital.
On Sunday, the NICU team celebrated its tiny heroes, with a special reunion that was way past due.
Family and friends of former NICU patients gathered to thank the staff who provided critical support during theirs baby’s most challenging journey.
“The physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists do a wonderful job at this hospital, but also in their case there is good family support”, said Dr. Scott Tisdell. He is the Neonatologist that helps take care of Elijah and Mason.
The theme for this year’s reunion was superhero. For Darren, little Mason is his biggest hero.
A theme that represents the challenges these strong babies overcame and the helping hands that made it all possible.
