LAKE HIGHLANDS -- Christopher Bowen is just five years old, but he’s spent most of his life battling something called Arterio-Venous Malformation. AVM is in his lungs, kidneys, liver, heart, and brain.
“Christopher has trouble breathing so basically, his lungs -- and body -- doesn't get the oxygen it needs, so he gets tired; he can’t play as long as the normal kids,” explained his mom, Kaylene Bowen.
Less than 1% of the population has AVM, which is lucky, because this disease has no cure.
“We don’t know how long Christopher will live with AVM,” sobbed Kaylene. Christopher’s mom said they work hard to make his life as normal as possible.
He goes to Kindergarten and loves playing soccer with his friends.
Saturday, “Christopher’s Crew” showed up for a bike rally to help raise money to pay staggering medical bills -- $30,000 a year -- so that’s the goal. They’re also hoping to buy him an electric wheelchair.
“I’m playing today and having a party,” said Christopher.
With his oxygen tank along for the ride, Christopher was able to be just another kid, playing with the rest of the kids on this beautiful day.
