Kahlua Caramel Nutella Brownie Recipe

We’ve all been there! Tempted to eat Nutella straight from the jar! But if you can resist the temptation, it’s great for baking all sorts of sweet treats like these Kahlua Caramel Nutella Brownies!

1         box brownie mix
1/2      cup nutella
1         cup Kahlua caramel *see recipe below
1/2      cup crushed pretzel
1         teaspoon sea salt

To make the brownies. Line an 9×13 inch baking dish with parchment paper or foil, letting the edges over hang from the pan so later you can easily lift the brownies out of the pan. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Make the brownie batter according to the box directions. Pour half the batter into the prepared pan. Dollop teaspoon size amounts of Nutella over the batter. Drizzle with three-fourths of the caramel (you may need to warm the caramel if it has set) and the crushed pretzel.  Spoon the remaining batter over top, using a spoon to lightly smooth out the batter. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the brownies are set on top. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Just before slicing, heat the remaining caramel over the stove. Cut the brownies into bars and then drizzle the warmed caramel over the brownies. Sprinkle with salt.

Rum Caramel Ingredients:
Makes 2 cups of caramel

4         cups sugar
1         cup water
4         tablespoon butter
2 1/2    cup heavy cream
2         tablespoon Kahlua
1         teaspoon sea salt

In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium-low heat until the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat and bring to a boil, without stirring. If necessary, use a wet pastry brush to wash down any crystals on the side of the pan. Boil until the syrup is a deep amber color, about 15-20 minutes.

Remove the sugar from the heat and carefully whisk in the heavy cream. The mixture will bubble. Stir in the unsalted butter, Kahlua and salt. Transfer the caramel to a dish and cool.
