NORTH TEXAS – From glazed, to long johns, to pastries filled with cream, today is a day for any donut lover’s dream. Yep, it’s National Donut Day.

Believe it or not, this day actually has a purpose, beyond the joyful bliss of eating sweet treats with no remorse.

"In World War I, the Salvation Army sent 250 women to the front lines of the war to make donuts, and to serve hot coffee to our soldiers there,” Major Ward Matthews said. Matthew is with the Salvation Army’s DFW Metroplex Command. “They cooked them in the soldier’s helmets, and the soldiers came back and talked about those donuts."

Wow, who knew?

The following year, the Salvation Army decided to have National Donut Day. Now, on the first Friday in June, we keep the tradition rolling. Most donut shops have even started offering free donuts to customers.

For those who are leery about consuming calories, don’t feel like you’re in a sticky situation. You can still partake in the celebration; by observation.

Pretty sweet!

So whether you’re indulging from a distance, or taking more of a Homer Simpson approach … Happy National Donut Day!
