DALLAS -- Children's show host Fred Rogers explained violence in a way that was intended for children but connects to the humanity within us all.

"Always look for the helpers," Rogers said. "There will always be helpers. If you look for the helpers, you'll know that there's hope."

The helpers were plentiful Thursday night as Dallas was left feeling helpless following the violent shooting of 12 Dallas Police and DART Officers, leaving five of them dead.

The role of the helpers extends well past what turned into a downtown battleground Thursday, though.

"There will be people that want to step up," said Guns and Hoses Foundation of North Texas Executive Director David Swavey. "Their calling will be now to come to the aid of the Dallas Police Department and DART."

And that's just what's happening across DFW.

"It's time that we all just come together and love each other," said Kendra Shier, Vice President of Operations for Bread Winners Cafe, Henry's Majestic, and The Quarter Bar. "It's sad we have to have a hashtag #DallasProud. I didn't think that would ever be our city, but we're going to grow stronger."

People are doing their part in many ways, monetary and otherwise.

In Plano, it's the Battle of the Badges blood drive. It's an event that was already planned as a friendly competition between Plano PD and FD, but it was made even more successful because of Police pride.

"We just want this whole world to come together and realize that we are one," said Plano resident Tina Aaron, after donating blood with her husband Stephen.

In the restaurants deals run deep with around 50 establishments offering proceeds or meals for officers.

Two of those are Cane Rosso and Henry's Majestic.

"Any Dallas officer that comes in or any DART officer that comes in in uniform or with proper ID, we’re buying them dinner," said Cane Rosso DFW Area Manager Todd Garton.

That deal is good through close of business Sunday. Additionally, anyone who can prove they donated $100 or more to the Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation or Assist the Officer gets the same deal.

Meanwhile at Henry's Majestic and its sister establishments, Bread Winners Cafe and The Quarter Bar, "Any uniformed Police Officer or plain clothes officer that’s got a badge will eat for the rest of July for free."

Those are the words of Vice President of Operations Kendra Shier. The group is also donating an unknown portion of their July sales to those officers' families.

Why are they doing it?

"It's not a noble gesture, it's just a human gesture," Shier said. "It's the least we could do. It makes us very happy."

Non-profit Guns and Hoses Foundation of North Texas has already raised more than $100,000 for the families of the five fallen officers, doing so in partnership with Operation Blue Shield.

“100% of all the money raised here goes straight to the families," Swavey said.

As the pain continues in Dallas, the paying it forward does too for the people who love their Police.
