DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department’s new cold case unit has solved its first mystery.

Shirley Baker Muhammad was sexually assaulted and killed 24 years ago. No suspects turned up in the case, but newly tested DNA evidence found on Muhammad’s body has linked 52-year-old William Norman Allen, Jr. to the crime.

Allen is currently serving a 99-year sentence in an Alabama prison for rape, but he’s eligible for parole in two years.

If indicted for Muhammad’s murder, Allen will likely be brought to Texas for trial.

DPD formed the new cold case unit this past spring, after eight years without one.
