DALLAS — It takes a special eye to make a show look perfect. Laura Walton has just that, and that’s what makes her our class act of the week.

Laura is a senior at Booker T. Washington. She loves theater, although she spends her time backstage.

“I like costume more because it allows you to communicate the character besides just their words,” said Laura.

Yep, she’s the head costume designer for productions at the school, like their upcoming performance of “Hair,” and she loves the challenge and freedom of it.

“I went into costume design saying, ‘Laura, there’s no limit, you can do whatever you want. You can design whatever you want. You can actually make it,’”

“For me, it’s always just a blur. She’s running from here to there, putting out fires,” said Charlton Gavitt, a teacher at Booker T. “Making sure everyone has what they need. She’s also constantly in our costume stock going through boxes trying to find just the right outfit, just the right shirt, just the right vest for the show.”

And that hard work paid off when Laura landed an elite position as a costume design assistant to a grad student at SMU.

“The process for being chosen as the assistant to the designer job was competitive,” she recounts. “I had to submit my resume, my portfolio. I had a one-on-one interview with Mari. When I found out that I had got the assistant job, I texted my mom. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! I got this! She’s gonna see the strength in me, this is awesome.’ I was super super excited.”

Well, we’re sure that Laura is going to keep designing a little extra color and style into life.
