DALLAS - Underneath the pulpit of Dallas’ St. Paul United Methodist Church lies a sweet, sweet gem – Val’s Cheesecake kitchen, which turns out some pretty heavenly creations.
So what inspired Valery Jean-Bart to start baking?
"I took care of my mom for a very long time and she was sick with cancer,” Jean-Bart said. Jean-Bart is the co-owner of Val’s Cheesecakes. “I took care of her for about five years. And during those five years we would bake constantly every Sunday. She would never finish her normal food. She always finished her dessert."
After her death, Jean-Bart and his good friend Chris Reece decided to go into business together in the kitchen of Chris’ church.
Reece handles the business side, while Val bakes and bakes and bakes.
"On our menu we have a ton of cheesecakes,” Jean-Bart said.
One of the signature cakes – the Pink Panther. A strawberry filling with a cinnamon graham cracker crust topped with – what else – chocolate! And they even have a brisket cheesecake. Crazy right?
Chew on this, if you don’t want a whole cake, Val’s offers their goodies in quaint little jars. Now that’s pretty cool!
So how do you get your hands on one of these divine desserts?
"A lot of people don't mind coming down to the church's kitchen to pick up their cheesecakes,” Jean-Bart said.
But if you’re not willing to make the trip downtown, head to a handful of DFW eateries for a decadent take out treat. You can also or online.
Just remember, when you take a bite of one of Val’s cheesecakes, don’t forget to say thanks to his Mom.
