FORT WORTH – Meet Melvin Roberson. After years of being in the restaurant business, he decided to take the leap and roll solo, creating Dough Boy Donuts – a food truck in Fort Worth.
“I just quit my job. I was a manager of a steak house here in the area,” Roberson said. “I’ve got three kids. My wife is a school teacher. So she’s got a lot of trust in me right now to be able to leave that comfortability and jump into this, which is very uncertain.”
And even before learning how to make donuts, Roberson thought up the name.
“There’s a saying that you never trust a skinny cook,” Roberson told NewsFix. “So if you go to skinny boy donuts, then you’re probably gonna be like, ‘C’mon, you’re a skinny guy.’ So if you go to Dough Boy Donuts and see a big guy like myself there, you know he knows what he’s talking about.”
And Roberson went with his gut when it came to the flavors, paying homage to one of his favorite foods.
“I love cereal. So, I decided why not put those on a donut?” he said.
Like the Cinna-crunch, with a vanilla butter glaze and topped with Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. And the Coo-Coo, topped with chocolate glaze and Cocoa Puffs.
Now if cereal isn’t your thing, there are other options, like the fairy dust donut with a lemon zest glaze and ground Skittles. And the s’mores donut, topped with a roasted marshmallow.
