DALLAS -- Need a book? Well, there's always the public library, or even free little libraries. Or if you're on the run, what about the bookmobile?

"We don't have a bookmobile anymore," said Dallas Public Library Director Jo Giudice. "We ceased our bookmobile service in October because it's just so cost prohibitive. And it's so big! We couldn't get into the neighborhoods."

So what's the answer to peddling books on the street?

You gotta pedal the book bike!

"I really envision kids just running up to this book bike getting library cards," Giudice said. "We'll be able to do all the services we do in a building. We're going to have a hot spot. We could even do computer classes around the book bike. How amazing would that be?"

To order the book bike (which is really a trailer that hooks to the back of a normal bike) was going to take about $5,000, so the Dallas Public Library decided to have Local Hub Bicycle Company in Deep Ellum do the work instead.

"We had just starting brainstorming ideas for what we could do to help our community, and I started reading articles about a book bike in San Francisco and thought that would be a perfect project for us to work on," said Local Hub Co-Owner Kristie Holt.

They took to Indiegogo and raised a little more than half of the $2,500 they needed. That campaign is over now, but you can still help by sending any donation straight to Local Hub:

  • PayPal:   --OR--
  • 2633 Main St, Ste. 130, Dallas, TX, 75226

"It's the gift of literacy so any amount they can possibly donate, whether it's $5, $1, $100, whatever they feel they can give back," Holt said.

"The book bike is going to be everywhere, and that's how I see it," Giudice added. "Anywhere you can pedal to, we'll be."

Peddling books and pedaling bikes, all in one package. Now, they just need you.
