DUBUQUE, IA – When it comes to reading, some kids are into it and others – not so much, especially during the summer months. But Courtney Holmes, a barber in Iowa, is using free haircuts to encourage youngsters to crack open a book.

Yep. One book + one kid reading to him while he cuts their hair = a free haircut .

Pretty neat equation!

"I was onboard to that because it was all about the kids and making sure the kids are reading their grade level,” Holmes said.

Another form of motivation may be Holmes’ reading ritual with his own kids.

"Every night I read two or three books to them,” Holmes said.

The best thing of all? The concept was initially offered for a back-to-school event only, but since it received such positive feedback, Holmes has added another chapter. Now, kids kindergarten through fifth grade can enjoy a free cut every first Tuesday of the month -- as long as they read.

"It's a great thing, but it's really not about me; it's about what we're doing here for the kids,” Holmes said.
