CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — An ongoing dispute over parking may have led a man to kill three University of North Carolina students. He’s Craig Stephen Hicks, who police in Chapel Hill say is cooperating with them.

The dead students included 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat, his new wife 21-year-old Yusor Mohammed Abu-Salha, and her 19-year-old sister Razan.

Reports say police responded to 9-1-1 calls of between five and ten shots fired at a condominium complex near the UNC campus. Because the victims were Muslim, social media lit up quickly with theories that they were targeted for their religion, like onTwitter with #muslimlivesmatter.

Hicks’s Facebook page appears to show him as a person who does not like religion of any kind.
