‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 7 Report Card

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 was a whirlwind of magical stones, heretics and dungeon monsters, which made for a pretty exciting year and a super mysterious cliffhanger.

We’ve graded some of the best and worst of “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7, but what gets an A and what gets an F?

Defan — A+

“The Vampire Diaries” has always been built on the premise of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) and their eternal struggle to love and hate each other in equal measure. Forget Stelena or Delena, Defan is the real love story of this show, and as much as we miss Elena (Nina Dobrev), her absence allowed the brothers to explore the deep-seated issues between them without sticking a shipping filter on it. Their brotherly love dominated Season 7, and created one of the most powerful episodes of series with “I Went to the Woods.”

Bonnie & Enzo — A

After watching them fall in love during the last few episodes of the season, Bonenzo became a ship for the storybooks, and their finale scenes were both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Their final kiss after Bonnie realizes she’s free from her Huntress urges was 10 kinds of crazy romantic, and we need more of these two in Season 8.

‘The Originals’ crossover — A-

In what was possibly the most successful crossover to date, “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” managed to merge their two worlds into an epic two-hour event that made sense for both stories and reunited old friends. Klaus will always have a soft spot for Stefan and their long lost bromance. The only thing that didn’t quite work was Caroline’s (Candice King) own visit to New Orleans. Teasing something like that and then not actually delivering on it is kind of a party foul.

Phoenix Stone — B

Originally, the idea behind the Phoenix Stone sounded way too confusing to pull off. Are the people inside it dead? Not dead? Soul-less? Comatose? However, it ended up being one of the best parts of the season, giving us a midseason finale shocker and creating a seriously stunning stand-alone episode for Damon’s version of hell.

Heretics — B

All in all, the heretics served their purpose as the new villains of the show who were not quite villains. They added drama and heat to the mix –- plus a pretty amazing romance between Nora (Scarlett Byrne) and Mary Louise (Teressa Lyanne) –- and then they all died or faded into the distance as new characters tend to do on “The Vampire Diaries.” Not a wild success, but ultimately not a failure either.

Flash forwards — B-

It’s hard to decide whether this plot device worked or not, and the truth is it probably falls somewhere in between. It breathed new life into the show and created an exciting tension and a mystery for everyone to gush over and speculate about. The follow through, however, didn’t quite answer all our questions in the big “aha!” way these kinds of plots typically do. Overall, it was a great trick that bobbled a little on the landing.

Vault monster — C+

We’re willing to bump this one up to an A+ depending on what “The Vampire Diaries” does with it in Season 8. Ultimately, the vault monster was introduced way too late in the game, and it didn’t mesh well with the bajillion other elements still jockying for time in the last arc of the season. We will admit, however, that we jumped sky high when it grabbed Enzo (Michael Malarkey) out of nowhere in the finale. What is that thing?!

Caroline’s pregnancy — F

We get that this was written in to accommodate Candice King’s real-life pregnancy, but the weirdness of the magical surrogacy coupled with the strange Caroline & Alaric (Matt Davis) romance just wasn’t worth it. In the end, it was all just an obstacle for Stefan and Caroline’s true love to overcome, which left a bad taste in many fans’ mouths. Did “Twilight” teach us nothing about pregnant vampires?
