Are You Having Audio Problems On Your TV?

If you are hearing Spanish (or Visual Descriptions or Text to Speech), it is because your TV has been set to receive the Secondary Audio Program (SAP), when it is available. Because most shows and commercials have no secondary audio program at all, and because the TV defaults back to primary audio when there is none, your TV could have been set to this for a long time with no apparent problem prior to this time. The main reason we carry this alternate “SAP” channel is for verbal descriptions for the visually-impaired. The number of programs offering this has been increasing, and the SAP channel has now begun carrying automated “text-to-speech” read-outs of severe weather warnings and similar emergency information. This in response to KDAF’s commitment to serving viewers with special vision and hearing needs, as well as increased FCC regulatory requirements.

If you do not wish to hear SAP audio, the problem can be fixed from your TV remote control (or the remote for any set-top boxes you may use to tune in channels on your TV). There is usually a small button right on the remote control that toggles the sound between ENGLISH and SPANISH, and the TV usually puts text on the screen to indicate which is selected when you push it. That button is often what has been accidentally pushed, and that’s what will take you back to the main audio channel if you push it again once or twice. Depending on make or model of the TV or set-top-box, we’ve seen this button variously labeled “AUDIO”, “LANG”, “SAP”, or “MTS”. On some cable boxes, the switch is not made with a button on the remote, but is done in the on-screen setup menu. You may need to consult the manual for your television, or technical support from your cable/satellite provider, for further information.
