FORT BEND -- An elderly man in Fort Bend County -- who apparently fed several alligators -- is lucky to be alive after one of them tried to make him its next meal.
Police say 88-year-old T.R. Smith fed three gators on several occasions but on Tuesday, one of them got too close while he was cutting weeds and bit Smith on the hand and leg.
Neighbors say it's not the first time the alligators have come up on shore, which is why the Texas Game Warden has rules against interacting with the animals.
"It's against the law to feed alligators, because what happens is they associate people with food, so we needed a tool that prevented that activity," said Texas Game Warden Barry Eversole.
Smith had to go to the hospital for his bites, but he's expected to make a full recovery.
