DALLAS -- There was plenty of rejoicing Sunday among North Texas Catholics.

That's because former Dallas Bishop Kevin Farrell was one of 17 bishops to be named cardinals by Pope Francis.

Only three Americans received the honor.

Farrell headed the Dallas diocese for 10 years, but is now in Rome for the Vatican appointment.

He and the 16 other newly-chosen cardinals will officially receive their new titles on November 29 in a special ceremony.

Bishop Greg Kelly will lead the Diocese of Dallas until the Pope can select Farrell's replacement.
