ELLIS COUNTY -- A judge in Ellis County just got herself a 74% pay raise using a process some didn't even know existed.

County Judge Carol Bush makes $95,000 a year, an amount she claims is among the lowest in the county when compared to other leadership positions.

Starting October 1, however, her pay will bump up to $165,000. That's more than Governor Greg Abbott makes.

So how did Bush get such a large raise?

She put together a salary grievance committee to hear her appeal; the committee was made up of nine random members of the county's jury pool.

Together, they agreed Bush deserved a $70,000 pay increase and county commissioners were forced to accept their vote.

Other Ellis County employees, by the way, received only a 3% pay raise this year.
