For those “Supernatural” fans yearning for the old school days of the show, take note: old school Castiel is coming to Season 12. New showrunner Andrew Dabb tells EW, “This year, especially toward the middle of the season, we’re using Castiel in stand-alone episodes in a way that he hasn’t been used in a long time.”
“I’d kind of like to see him go back to being the badass warrior Cas from Season 4 for a little bit, and revisit that aspect of his character,” Misha Collins told Zap2it at San Diego Comic-Con. “Every time I’ve said what I wanted on the show in the past, it has not come to fruition. So, I thought that wasn’t going to happen but that’s how we’re starting Season 12.”
Warrior Castiel may very well be the best Castiel. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him in full battle mode, and who wouldn’t want to break a few bones after being possessed by Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) for so long? Something tells us that vengeance will be at the forefront of his mind as we head into the new episodes.
As for the stand-alone episodes in question, Dabb points to episode 12 as an important one for Castiel. “That’s very heavily about Castiel and the journey he’s been on, some things from his past that we’re not aware of are being brought to light.”
Since we know a lot about his vessel Jimmy’s past — Claire Novak is still very much alive in the “Supernatural” world — could we be getting into Castiel’s angel backstory? From the sound of things, it’s very likely.
“Supernatural” Season 12 premieres Thursday, Oct. 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
