PLANO - A star baseball player who had committed to play for Oklahoma State is now in jail, charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child by sexual contact.
The incidents allegedly happened in the bathroom of a day care operated out of his mother.s home in Plano. 17-year-old Zachary Holifield, an incoming senior at Plano High School, was arrested last month.
According to the affidavit, one little girl told investigators she was first molested when she was just 3 years old and described how Holifield asked her to kiss his private parts. She also said she was supposed to keep it a secret.
The abuse with the victim allegedly happened when the mother left Holifield alone with the children. After his arrest, Plano detectives say Holifield admitted he had sexually abused the girl, who is now five years old, on several occasions.
On Tuesday Holifield`s lawyer, Pete Schulte, issued a statement saying, “The information, as written by Plano PD investigators, is not what it appears to be. Therefore, I respectfully ask that the public withhold passing judgment until all the facts are known."
Holifield was in court Wednesday asking that his $600,000 bond be reduced. The judge moved his case to the juvenile system. His lawyer says it should have been there all along.
"Now a 17-year-old senior in high school is having to deal with these allegations because of how the cases were played in the system,” Schulte said. “If they had started in the juvenile system, none of this would be public."
In the juvenile system, suspects' names are usually not made public, but because this case originated in the adult system, the suspect's name and key documents, such as an arrest warrant affidavit, were released.
Plano PD says they are investigating to see if there are more victims.
