DALLAS -- If you're scouting around for a canine companion, Atticus is a real gem.

"He is the laid back pug/chihuahua mix of your dreams," said Dallas Pets Alive! Marketing Director Holly Morgan.

It wasn't always easy, though, for Atty. This little four-year-old started as a stray, not knowing who to trust.

"He was so very fearful in the beginning that he would often pee if he became scared or shy," Morgan said. "He doesn't do that anymore though."

Factor in a health crisis on top of that.

"He was also heart worm positive," Morgan said.

But Dallas Pets Alive! and Dallas Animal Services defended this down and out dog.

"We are excited to say he's finished his crate rest, and he's ready to be adopted now. He's healthy," Morgan said.

So why is Atticus the one for you? His namesake, Atticus Finch in the seminal Harper Lee novel To Kill a Mockingbird said, "All men are created equal," and Atticus lives up to that.

"He does really well with other dogs too -- big dogs, little dogs," Morgan said. "Not intimidated at all."

He's also calm, cool, and collected.

"He's going to be a really great lap dog and companion for someone," Morgan said. "He'll run and jump and play some when he wants, but he's mostly the laid back guy."

The ruling on this one?

Definitely guilty... of being fit for your family.
