VALLEY RANCH, TX — This NFL Draft has held one surprise after another for Cowboys fans! After all, the week started off with Jerry Jones saying that he didn’t think the Cowboys had “to have a running back at all”, and then on Thursday the Boys took the number one running back in the draft, Ezekiel Elliott!
But the real stunner came at the start of day two when Dallas announced their second round pick: Jaylon Smith, a linebacker out of Notre Dame.
So let’s unpack the pick that sent the Metroplex into shock. Jaylon Smith was once considered the best player in this year’s draft class, but then during this year’s Fiesta Bowl, Smith suffered a devastating knee injury, tearing his ACL and LCL, causing severe nerve damage.
How severe? Most don’t think he has a shot to even play a single down in 2016.
But the Cowboys have the inside scouting lane on his recovery, thanks to the fact that the team’s surgeon, Dr. Dan Cooper, performed the operation on Smith’s knee.
After the pick, Stephen Jones admitted that Smith might not play this year but that “What he ultimately is going to be is certainly worth the investment of a second-round pick.”
On Day 3 of the draft, the Boys still weren’t done with the surprises. With seven picks between rounds three and six, Dallas mainly bolstered their defense, but they also grabbed a potential successor to Tony Romo!
The team selected Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State in the 4th round, and he’s sure to be a candidate for the team’s backup QB in training camp.
To close out their 2016 Draft the Cowboys went way outside the box again, picking someone who hasn’t even been a football player lately!
Rico Gathers is a 6’ 8” forward on the Baylor Bears basketball team, who has made the transition to the tight end position for the NFL.
So a star running back, a highly regarded linebacker who may not play this year, a possible heir to Romo and a basketball player. Just another crazy year of drafting for America’s Team.
