Starz period drama “Outlander” is a few weeks into its second season and CW period drama “Reign” is about to return for the back half of Season 3. Both series are set hundreds of years ago in Europe, but in their current seasons, they’ve kind of swapped places.

“Outlander” has gone from the highlands of Scotland to the palaces of France, while “Reign” is going to be departing France as Mary (Adelaide Kane) fights to return to her home country of Scotland. And both shows say the change in location is like shooting a completely different show.

“It changed everything,” Ron Moore, “Outlander’s” executive producer, tells Zap2it of moving the action to France. “It was like we were doing a whole new TV show. We had to create entirely new sets, new costumes, new set decorations. There was nothing we used in Scotland that fit in Paris. You were creating a whole new show.”

He adds that the change in location also completely changed “the tone on the set.”

“Suddenly we had a lot of French cast members coming in, which gave a different energy to the whole thing. It was interesting when we were finished with the Paris storyline and started doing the Scottish storyline [in the second half of the season], the cast and the crew were all together like, ‘Oh, we’re back on “Outlander.”‘ It was like we had gone and done this other show and then returned to Scotland and were doing ‘Outlander’ again.”

Kane echoes his comments, in reverse, telling Zap2it she’s so excited for fans to finally see Scotland on “Reign.”

“Seeing all the new sets that we’ve built and the super cool new locations we shot at and the new wardrobe. We completely revamped Mary’s wardrobe for Scotland,” says Kane. “It’s practically a whole new show, it’s a whole new facet to the world that we’ve built and it’s really exciting. It’s like starting all over again, which is cool.

“I’ve seen it in person, but I’m excited to see how it plays on screen and see the fans’ reactions to Scotland. And I’m excited to see who they cast for Scottish court and all that awesome, awesome stuff. We’ve kind of gotten started there, but in Season 4 we’re really getting into it.”

“Outlander” airs Saturdays at 7 p.m. CT on Starz and “Reign” returns Monday, April 25 at 7 p.m. CT on The CW.
