DALLAS -- There was a time when the mall was the place to be. Now, that’s not so much the case.
“I’m kinda losing interest in it,” said 19-year-old Arisbeth Munoz.
With many of the merchandise meccas calling it quits, the remaining retail shops are trying to stay relevant.
It looks like the NorthPark Center has taken that step by going another step up. Celebrating its 50th year, the popular mall has become a hot topic on Reddit because teen mainstays Aeropostale, Claire’s and Forever 21 are on their way out.
According to employees at Aero and Claire’s, they were given no choice because of rising rent prices.
There’s no official word on why Forever 21 is leaving, but there’s no question walking by the store that it’s final call.
NewsFix reached out to NorthPark Management Company for a statement, but signs in NorthPark Center already confirm a big time shopping shuffle.
The sign already reflects what the mall will look like this May.
It shows 12 stores moving to new locations within the mall:
-White House Black Market
It also shows 15 retailers that are either new to NorthPark or are coming soon:
-Kate Weiser Chocolate
-Ted Baker London
People seem split on the subject. Plenty of Reddit users say it’s a great move for NorthPark, and some in the community point out recent mall crimes as a reason to raise standards.
The move, though, is leaving the young crowd feeling kicked to the curb.
"I can honestly say, most likely when those stores go away, I’m probably not going to be much interested in going to NorthPark like I used to be,” Munoz said.
As for the ducks in the NorthPark fountain, they appear safe for now… at least until the swans are brought in to replace them.
