Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says Mary Hastings, a 63-year-old teacher at Ozen High School, was arrested Friday and charged with assault.

The video was posted to Twitter Friday, showing Hastings push papers off a student’s desk before hitting him five times on the back of his head, telling the student, “You’re stopping them from graduating!” and calling him an “idiot ass.” The boy asks Hastings, “Why are hitting me?” to which Hastings mimics the student for the class. Somehow, the boy is laughs.

According to the Beaumont ISD, Hastings “was immediately removed from the classroom and place on administrative leave pending action on her contract.” The district says it does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct.
