DALLAS -- In The Land Before Time world full of 'long necks,' 'three horns,' and 'big mouths,' there was Spike. He was sleepy, hungry, sweet, and homeless.

Thousands of years later, history repeats itself with a Spike in North Texas.

"Spike originally was with a family that had him as a puppy but fell on some hardships and couldn't afford to take care of him," said Dallas Pets Alive! Marketing Director Holly Morgan.

The Spike in our tale is a bulldog-boxer mix, and when times got tough, this 93-pound teddy bear ran out of time.

"They couldn't even afford to feed him," Morgan said.

He's only two years old, but he has plenty of love in that big body.

"He loves kids," Morgan said. "He loves all other animals, cats, every kind of dog. He loves to cuddle. He thinks he's a 93-pound lap dog."

On top of that, he's surprisingly active -- in short bursts, at least.

"He will play and get a burst of energy and run and be crazy and fetch and then just collapse and take a nap right where he is."

The Spike from the dino days and his adoptive family may be extinct, but this big boy in Big D has plenty of time left to land in a "fur-ever" home.
