DENTON -- Denton PD announced an arrest in the murder of UNT junior Sara Mutschlechner who was shot on New Year's Day. Eric Jamal Johson, also known as Santana Sage, was arrested in Arizona on a military base. Turns out, he's a Corporal in the Marine Corps.

"What lead us to him was a combination of things. We had several different witnesses from the victims vehicle and obviously from the party. Some social media information that we had," Denton PD spokesperson Shane Kizer said.

Mutschlechner was at a party at a house in Denton with friends. When they left in Sara's car, Denton PD says they were approached by a silver Honda Pilot at the intersection of Elm and University Drive. Johnson was reportedly in the backseat.

"There were words exchanged. Apparently, it was an applicable conversation to begin with that quickly went downhill and some derogatory statements were made toward the female occupants of that vehicle," Kizer explained. "I believe one of the male occupants in Sara's vehicle made a comment that that was offensive. Some comments were made back towards him. Even a couple of threats were thrown and about that time they were driving through the intersection, and that's when several shots were fired."

The arrest warrant states Johnson threatened to shoot them.

"He was seen with a handgun in the vehicle right before the time the shots were fired from the vehicle," said Kizer.

Johnson is currently in custody in Arizona and has been charged with murder. It's not clear if anyone else will be arrested.
