SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A stabbing suspect was shot and killed by police in San Francisco’s Bayview District Wednesday night.

The suspect was still armed with a knife when police surrounded him on a sidewalk.

Police say they tried to subdue the man with several rounds of non-lethal bean bag shots and pepper spray.

Officers then opened fire to defend an officer when the man started moving toward the officer.

“They called for higher powered, less lethal, that was deployed. It actually knocked the suspect to the ground. He did not drop the knife, he got up again, officers appeared to maintain their encirclement. As he attempted to move northbound on Keith toward Fitzgerald, one of the officers cut off his path. He went towards the officer and that officer and four other officers fired in defense of the officer he was moving towards,” SFPD Chief Greg Suhr said.

A witness on a nearby bus shot cell phone video of the incident and posted it on Instagram; the video shows moments leading up to the fatal shooting.

Police say they have seen the video and they are encouraging anyone else who captured video of the incident to come forward.
