In 2012, almost 21% of kids between 12 and 19 were considered obese and with obesity comes increased chance of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and cancer.
And one of the biggest causes of childhood obesity – and the reason we're talking about it so close to Halloween – is sugar. That's right, kids, we're about to ruin sugar for you.
Sugar is kinda terrible for you. And when you realize the average American child consumes 2-to-3 times the recommended amount , you start to see why our kids are so unhealthy.
Researchers at the University of California-San Francisco and Touro University put 44 children on low-sugar diets and, almost immediately, the transformations began. Diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides and bad cholesterol all went down while tolerance for glucose and extra insulin in the blood stream both improved. Simply put, less sugar equals healthier living.
And this isn't just for kids, either. BroBible.com has a story about one of their readers, a 24 yr-old named Jared Zaworski, who was tipping the scales at 302 pounds. Upset with his health, he cut out sugar and bread. He lost over one hundred pounds in 7 months all without entering a gym.
Of course, he jogs and does push-ups, but he's not doing a fad diet or lifting weights three hours a day. But still, he cut the sugar and saw immediate results.
So what are we saying? Keep your kids from trick-or-treating? Take all their candy and throw it out? No. Not at all. Just keep track of how much your kids are eating and make sure they don't overdo it. Maybe they get one piece of candy each day, after a healthy meal...and change out soda and fruit juice for water. It's little changes that can make a huge difference in their health.
