CALABASAS,Calif. -- Selena Gomez is no stranger to the spotlight. We've seen her grow from a talented tyke on Barney to casting spells on Wizards of Waverly Place. And now, singing her top pop hits.
Not to mention, we've even followed her on again-off again relationship with Justin Bieber.
But now Selena is revealing news about her health. The 23-year-old North Texas native is receiving chemo after she was diagnosed with Lupus.
What's Lupus, you ask? Well, it's an auto immune disease where the body's immune system attacks normal tissue. There's no known cause and no real cure, but the Lupus Foundation of America reports the disease can be managed with drugs and chemo to reduce inflammation and suppress an overactive immune system.
Rumors first started that Selena was dealing with substance abuse after she checked into a rehab facility in 2013 and canceled her tours in Asia and Australia. In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Selena talks about having to deal with her diagnosis during a time when people thought she was hooked on drugs.
Not to mention, the constant bombardment of Justin and Selena relationship stories.
But Selena's diagnosis isn't keeping her down. She's promoting her new album, Revival, she's starring in Hotel Transylvania 2 and has a Pantene commercial.
It's all proof that Lupus patients can live productive lives with treatment.
