DALLAS — Ready, set, go! Groups at Kroger on Maple Ave. sure knew how to race into Breast Cancer Awareness month.
“Today, we are kicking off our sharing courage campaign. For the next two weeks, select products in every Kroger store will give money back to breast cancer research,” said Katie Nock, Kroger Public Affairs Specialist.
Survivor teams from Susan G. Komen Dallas, North Texas, and Fort Worth paired up with Kroger employees to grab those groceries.
“Yes, we are going to win!” Shanta Fields said.
These survivors were scootin’ through the store so fast, you could’ve mistaken it for Supermarket Sweep!

“Yea!” survivor Ann Maher screamed. “I had a great partner. He was awesome! I’ve never ran so much in a grocery store, had a couple collisions, but we did it!”
$1,000 is going to their affiliate, and not to mention the winner nabbed some free State Fair tickets! But everyone walked away with something more.
“I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer when I was 29 years old. My mother actually died from breast cancer when she was 42,” survivor Shanta Fields told NewsFix. “I kind of found it haphazardly. I said, ‘Oh, this doesn’t feel right.’ Within a month, month and a half, I was doing treatment. I am now very happy, and I’m healthy, and I’m excited to be a 21-year survivor.”
“This week alone, 70 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 13 people will die, just in this week. And early detection saves lives, and that’s the mission of all of Susan G. Komen,” said Mary Frances Hoover, Executive Director at Susan G. Komen North TX.
“It’s incredibly heartwarming,” Katie Nock smiled. “So many of our customers and so many of our employees are directly impacted, and it’s such a wonderful, moving way for us to be able to do something -- to be able to give back.”
