VALLEY RANCH — And then there were 53.

The Cowboys made their final roster cuts on Saturday, cutting ties with 20 players and placing two others on the suspended list to start the season.

Notable cuts included Dustin Vaughan, who served as the team’s third string quarterback in 2014. Fellow backup QB Jameil Showers was also cut meaning the Boys will go into week one with just two quarterbacks on the roster.

Outsider running backs, Ben Malena and Gus Johnson both had good performances in the team’s final preseason game, but it wasn’t enough to save them from the chopping block.

The regular season 53 man roster does not include Rolando McClain or Greg Hardy who are both suspended through the Cowboys first four games.

Earlier this week, head coach Jason Garrett said that making the final cuts before every season was “the worst part of our job”, and once again that’s proving true, with promising rookies and familiar faces from last year forced to find a new path into the NFL.
