DALLAS - Just when you might be forgiven for thinking all cops are bad, some Dallas cops are being honored for the heroic acts that saved the life of a 4-year-old girl.

On Saturday, cops who were helping out with MegaFest were flagged down by a family which had been targeted in a drive-by in Oak Cliff. The 4-year-old was shot in the leg.

Her mother reached out to the MegaFest officers for help. Officer Juan Saldana was the first cop on the scene. “The stepdad and the mother got out of the car, I saw the mother had the little kid in her arms, bleeding,” Saldana said.

Just moments later, Officer Christina Mattox arrived on the scene and took lifesaving action. “Her mom had her leg wrapped up in a t-shirt and so I lifted up the t-shirt from the wound; I saw the blood was pouring out so I knew I had to use my tourniquet or the 4-year-old would`ve bled out," Mattox said.

Both the tourniquets and gauze kits that were used are donated to Dallas PD for situations just like this; to buy more time until paramedics can show up and take over.

Officer Jesus Tovar, another cop who was on the scene, credits their extensive training. “Dallas Police Department does go the extra mile in regards to giving us extra training, and it was in that extra training that we received training on how to use a down officer kit," Tovar said.

We hear the 4-year-old is now recovering and doing well, Tovar thinks there may have been a bit of divine intervention involved. ''It was a MegaFest event, there's no doubt that it was saturated in prayer, and do I believe Heaven's door opened and extended a helping hand? I personally believe that took place in also saving that young girl`s life.”
