Jimmy Carter, nation's 39th president, announced he has cancer.

ATLANTA — Former President Jimmy Carter has cancer that has spread from his liver to other parts of his body, he announced Wednesday.

90-year-old Carter had a “small mass” removed from his liver during surgery earlier this month. At the time, he received a prognosis for a full recovery.

But he said in a statement Wednesday, “Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare.”

Carter, the nation’s 39th president, said more information will be released as soon as next week.
