DALLAS -- Dirty Dancing is in DFW! And no, we’re not talking about twerking. Dirty Dancing the Musical is on stage at Dallas Summer Musicals at the Fair Park Music Hall now through July 5. And NewsFix got an all access backstage pass.
“Well, they can expect the feeling that they got when they saw the movie,” performer Christopher Tierney said about the show. “It’s gorgeous, it’s fun, it’s still touching, sexy people. It’s a lot of really sexy moves.”
While it might take two to tango, it takes many more folks than that to bring this 80s classic all around the states.
“It’s not just the dancers and the actors that are here, it’s the crew,” Tierney explained. “They recreate everything. It always impresses me.”
“Everybody knows there’s certain moments about this movie that are really, really iconic. You know, the big lift. Nobody puts a baby in a corner, and she carried a watermelon,” Tierney said holding the watermelon prop. “Not as heavy as a real watermelon, but still looks pretty good.”
“Yeah, it’s wild,” he said when asked about his participation in the production. “I’m a bit more aged than some of the kids in the cast, and I remember when the movie came out. Patrick Swayze’s an icon, and it’s a really very, very fun thing to recreate something that he made so legendary, and to work with the woman who wrote the movie [Eleanor Bergstein.]”
In addition to classics like Hungry Eyes, In the Still of the Night, You Don’t Own Me, and Love Man by Otis Redding, some songs might hit home in a different way.
“We sing We Shall Overcome. It’s a great underscoring of the civil rights movement that happens during the show. And it’s so prevalent now, where we’re at.”
If two left feet are keeping you from boogieing to Dallas, the show will scoot to Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth July 7-12.
You never know, you might have the time of your life!
