DRIPPING SPRINGS, TX – There’s a reason your mama told you not to stand outside in a lightning storm. But sometimes being inside is no guarantee. Just ask Macie Martinez of Dripping Springs, south of Austin.
She and her parents were taking cover inside their house during a tornado warning on Memorial Day. Macie had just opened the refrigerator to grab a snack when lightning struck the house.
“I remember when I was holding on it was the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced in my whole life,” Macie said. “Then, afterwards, I couldn’t feel my legs, and I couldn’t walk and I was just shaking.”
Macie’s dad had to pry her off the door handle.
Her parents rushed her to the hospital where doctors found a wound on her back, apparently where the lightning left her body.
