ELLIS COUNTY - What started as a routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase and shootout overnight in Ellis County. It's not clear why an Italy cop tried to take two men into custody. But when he did, the suspects assaulted him and stole his squad car.

Sergeant Lonny Haschel says that's when the chase began, “A lengthy pursuit then ensued throughout southern Ellis County traversing many roadways.”

Inside the cop car were 18-year-old Miguel Martinez and 23-year-old Daniel Dankert. Cops finally caught up with the stolen vehicle traveling the wrong way down I-35 and tried to negotiate with Martinez over the police radio.

The negotiation eventually came down to a final request for a phone call to loved ones.

“I want this one phone call so she can tell my son that I love him and I miss him. That's all I want from you right now! Anything else and we're going to do something stupid to ourselves, please!” At that

At that point, things turned deadly.

“Law enforcement officers at the scene heard a gunshot inside the car and the driver opened the door and displayed a firearm,” Sgt. Haschel said. “The suspect, the driver was shot. They approached the police Tahoe and they also found the second suspect deceased inside.”

The incident shut down I-35 for hours. The investigation by the Texas Rangers will take a lot longer.
