Chew on This: Luscher’s Red Hots

DEEP ELLUM - Getting a Chicago-style hot dog in Dallas is no easy feat. And that’s something "Windy City" native Brian Luscher was looking to change. So he opened -- Luscher’s Red Hots.

"I think Luscher's has been working in my brain maybe before I was born,” Brian Luscher said.

His grandfather and uncle owned their own burger joint, where he got his start flipping burgers in his diapers.

"I think it's in my DNA,” Luscher said.

Now he’s able to bring a piece of home to Luscher’s, literally, starting with the dogs.

"I make the sausage myself,” Luscher said. "I make the mustard, I make the pickles, I make the peppers, I make the relish. We make everything ourselves."

Luscher’s also offers burgers and "Eye-Talian" beef sandwiches, dunked in gravy of course. And chew on this, there’s a certain way to eat these bad boys. It’s called the “Chicago lean.”

Oh, and for those of you who need it, there’s ketchup.

"I will not put hot ketchup on your hotdog,” Brian Luscher said. "You know what, if somebody wants to put ketchup on their hot dog, I won't throw 'em out."

All and all, it’s a pretty friendly atmosphere with the perfect mix of Chicago and Texas.

"The Deep Ellum neighborhood couldn't be more welcoming. And Chicagoans have been coming and they're very happy,” Brian Luscher said.

Now, that’s just doggone good.
